This is a modern period American poster by Jacob Lawrence for the 1972 Olympics in Munich. This dynamic and colorful image shows runners on the track crossing the finishing line of a relay race. Bright red, yellow, green, and blue are dispersed throughout the image, linking one runners shoes to another runners shirt. The gray track swoops through the image, and the harsh geometric lines and limited use of perspective creates a violently and surreal dynamic image of an Olympic race. Jacob Lawrence is one of the most recognized 20th century African-American painters. He is known for his portrayal of African-American life, and his use of colors and shapes to create a “dynamic cubism.”
Lawrence’s work is held in the permanent collection of many major museums, such as the National Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and a painting hangs in the White House’s Green Room.
This is a silkscreen print on heavy paper, limited edition of 2,000, from 1971.
Also there was an edition 200 hand signed, as well as an edition 10,000 offset print on poster paper.
