Original 1969 vintage poster celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, the predecessor of modern-day San Diego, by the Spanish in 1769.
The poster features a Spanish galleon, perhaps a rendition of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s San Salvador; a missionary and conquistador; the skyline of downtown San Diego; and the California Tower of Balboa Park.
The poster’s artist, France Carpentier, was active in the 1960s and was associated with artwork of the California Missions.
The poster was lithographed by Neyenesch Printers of San Diego.
