This is a very rare hand-signed Art Nouveau & Belle Epoque Decorative Panel (Limited Edition) #43 by Paul Berthon in 1898. Pictured is a topless Salomé, with the head of John the Baptist in the bottom left corner. She’s sitting, wearing the veils.
Salomé, according to biblical literature, was the immediate agent in the execution of John Baptist. She was the daughter of Herodias, and stepdaughter of Herod Antipas. She was also known for the dance of the 7 Veils which was performed in front of Herod II.
The panel is done in the usual Berthon colors. Notice muted greens & yellows, along with Salomé’s red sandals matching the spilled blood at the bottom of the panel.
Berthon signed this panel below in pencil below the floral design in the center right margin.
