Jan Thorn-Prikker was a leading proponent of Dutch Art Nouveau. This poster advertises an exhibition of Dutch Art in Krefeld Germany and was commissioned by Friedrich Deneken, then director of Kunstmuseen Krefeld. The patterns embedded in the design show tulips but also take reference from batik textiles of Java Indonesia which was at the time part of the Dutch Empire. The orange circles and band of orange disks at centre left refer to the House of Orange-Nassau, the Royal Family of the Netherlands.
