French Mid-Century Poster for ‘Igol’ by Marcel Chauveau, 1955
This is a Mid-Century Modern period French advertising poster for Igol Motorcycles Racing Oil by Marcel Chauveau, 1955. This wonderfully modern image features a very clean design – the poster is primarily a blank white. In the bottom center of the poster is a snapshot of a motorcycle race that grows larger as it extends to the right side of the poster. A racer, number 9, dressed in dark colors with a bright red helmet, is seen in the center background of the image, with another racer, number 6, ahead of him in the foreground. The foregrounded racer is intricately detailed: his white helmet reads “Igol,” and he is dressed in orange to match his orange bike. The image features bold colors of blues, oranges, reds and browns; the sketch-like design of the image emphasizes the dynamic movement of the race. At the very bottom of the poster, below the image, there is text reading – first in black cursive typography – “sponsored by oils,” and then – in bright red block typography – “Igol.” This is a very rare Mid-Century Modern period advertising poster.
This poster was printed by B. Sirven, Imp. Toulouse, d’apres Maraf Chaureau, France 1955.
