This artwork is from Les Maitres de L’Affiche series; miniature versions of outstanding stone lithograph artworks of the most important advertising posters by the finest artists.
Boutet de Monvel was a painter and watercolorist from Orleans who created only a few posters. His experience in illustrated children’s literature and his modern style influenced by Japanese aesthetics combine to create a wonderful design …” (Health p.179)
His delightful poster for the operetta “La Petite Poucette,” translates to ” Little Miss Hop-o’-My-Thumb.” Using a large red umbrella, as the centrepiece, held aloft by a sweet singing little girl with red scarf and red socks, set against another half dozen singing little girls each with shawl and red bow, Monvel creates a delightful composition. The dancing typeface of the title “La Petite Poucette” seems to flow from the chorus of the girl’s voices. Even the name of the music composer “Raoul Pugno” in it’s almost avant garde style, becomes part of the composition.
