This artwork is from Les Maitres de L’Affiche series; miniature versions of outstanding stone lithograph artworks of the most important advertising posters by the finest artists.
“This illustrator and designer, who did most of his work for the Chicago publishing firm of Stone & Kimball (along with Will Bradley), has left us about ten posters. Writing in ‘The Poster’ in 1900, Scotson-Clark commented, Hazenplug is not a prolific man, but what he has done is distinctly good” (Phillips, III)
“He has frequently been dismissed as an imitator of Bradley, but this judgement is unfair. While several of his posters share a kinship with Bradley’s posters, Hazenplug’s use of colour and perspective was his own. The poster for ‘Living Posters’ a benefit for visiting nurses in Chicago, was composed in large flat areas of colour with little dependence on the drawn line. (Lauder, p.188)
