French Art Deco Vintage Liquor Poster ‘Maurin Quina’ by Leonetto Cappiello, 1906

SOLD

Out of stock

Maurin Quina is a maceration of cherries, quinine, and bitter almonds, with a fruity and delicate bouquet. It is similar to a liqueur, but does not contain enough sugar content to legally be classified as one.

On the black background, we see the impish green devil uncorking the bottle. Cappiello uses the green devil/fairy (la fée verte) that was associated with absinthe. However, this ad backfired, and the product was banned by the French government shortly after release BECAUSE of this association (even though Maurin Quina was not an absinthe).

Maurin Quina has been reintroduced in the United States and France featuring this original Cappiello Green Devil Poster as its label. (notice his devilish red lips and eyes, also the purple shadow around the entire devil).

At the bottom is the golden/yellow font with the title.
