This artwork is from Les Maitres de L’Affiche series; miniature versions of outstanding stone lithograph artworks of the most important advertising posters by the finest artists.
This unusual travel poster by Moreau-Nelaton a leading impressionist painter, illustrator, designer and ceramicist, advertises the pardon of Saint-Jean du Doigt (St. John of the finger). The great Breton pilgrimage procession with archaeological curios and sea bathing, and most important Hotel-Pension St. Jean (Vouaux, proprietor). As with his other works, the artist uses warm pastel colours, hand lettering, and a classical renaissance treatment of the Saint and his upright haloed lamp. The overall effect is warm and inviting and speaks effectively to the pilgrims who should attend.
